Rikki,

Thanks for sharing your daughter's story and glad to hear that she loves Lego. It is too bad that your daughter considers primary colors only for "boys" and pastels are for "girls". Perhaps the fact that she is constructing and building with Lego bricks is all that really matters.

My 4 year old daughter purchased her first "big kid legos" with money she received for her birthday last year- a pink brick box. She was so excited to have Legos like her brother's, but pink and purple- her favorite colors. She more recently received 2 of the new "Lego Friends" sets. One is a mini science lab, the other is a fashion design studio- the design studio is the set that came with the Lego laptop that her brother is quite jealous of and a small ruler and camera.
For Christmas my husband and I purchased a bulk lot of Legos from Goodwill. We constructed the complete sets that we could find instructions for and split them between our son and daughter. Our daughter looked at them and said "boy legos." She was a little disappointed until we took them apart and started building other things. Now that we have a couple of these newer sets, my daughter is more excited than ever about her Legos. She loves the colors, not just pink and purple, but a couple of lighter blues that are quite pretty. Personally I wish Lego had come out with these sort of sets decades ago- when my sister and I were little, Lego sets were considered "boy toys" so we had to content ourselves with playing Lego at the homes of friends who had brothers. As a mom, I wish Lego had stuck with normal minifigures for these sets, but still I'm glad that my little girl has Legos that excite her.

Classifying toys by subject and interest sounds like a great idea to me, Terri. Riley's observation that pink stuff isn't appealing for every girl tells me that there are probably many other girls who feel the same. But for those who love pink, I guess LEGO will feel a bit more relevant to them. Hopefully, no matter the LEGO piece colors, girls will engage in creative building right alongside boys.

Good points! Although there seems to be a hopeful trend towards classifying toys by subject/interest, as Hamleys in London is doing, rather than by gender, which seems like a good idea to me. A little girl named Riley made headlines last week when she shared her thoughts on "Pink Stuff" - http://peggyorenstein.com/books/cinderella.html-

Interesting! The Khan Academy is getting a lot of attention these days and sounds like a really interesting model. Our public schools could really use fresh ideas, especially in math and science these days!!

I am intrigued with what a bricks and mortar school would look like and I hope that one will land near me sometime soon!

I have never dealt with a more amicable company as LEGO was during this adventure. It was amazing how positive everyone was. The children met astronaut Leland Melvin and also President of LEGO Stephan Turnipseed. Pictures of our time with Lego can be seen at my wife's blog: http://4overyonder.blogspot.com/

Thank you LEGO for such a wonderful trip and experience.

Each book stands on its own merits however if I have to pick one it would be Brisingr, only downside is the need to wait for the conclusion for so long a time after finishing each book
